Disc to Digital

Disc to Digital

If you are movie collector, you have several old DVD or Blu-ray movies on a shelf and a few digital movies that were included with your newer movies. Would you be surprised to know that you can convert many of these older movies to a digital format legally?

In the past there were several options like CinemaNow, Flixster, and Vudu. Today, Vudu is the remaining retailer with disc to digital. Conversions currently cost $2 per disc for DVD to SD or Blu-ray to HDX format. There is also a $5 per disc option to convert DVD to HDX format. There is no UHD option at this time. Vudu will use Walmart gift cards if you prefer to not use a credit card. I recommend this since removing your credit card from the site requires contacting their support directly by phone. Movies that are Movies Anywhere compatible will convert and go into your digital locker (see previous post https://digitalmoviecollector.blogspot.com/p/digital-lockers-making-most-out-of-your.html).

Disney Not Supported

I wanted to update this page to mention that disc to digital is not supported by Disney owned movies. While this does include Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises, it should be noted that with Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox that all titles under Fox have been removed from the Vudu disc to digital listings.

Options

Vudu started offering the service through your local Walmart photo center but have moved exclusively to in home disc conversions. There are two in home options for converting your old DVD or Blu-ray movies into digital. The Vudu To Go app is available for you computer (support will end for this option December 31, 2019). This option has no limit on conversions but requires you to have a Blu-ray drive if you want to convert. If there is interest in this option, I will update this page to include those instructions.

Mobile Conversion

This will show the mobile conversion through a web browser. Please note that Android users can convert directly from the Vudu app while iOS users will need to use the mobile web option shown below. It is also important to note that mobile conversions must be done from a cell phone with location allowed. The location is used to validate you are converting from your Vudu billing address.
  • Go to www.vudu.com/disc and select the Convert Disc option. Going to this link from a computer browser will allow you to a search for movies that are available for conversion.

  • Select OK on allowing the mobile browser to access your Current Location.
  • Select Convert Disc to being the process.
  • The page will access your phone's camera to take a picture of the movie's bar code. Once you have taken a clear picture, select the Use Photo.
  • If a DVD is used, you will be prompted to select the quality ($2 for SD or $5 for HDX). Blu-ray conversions will only show HDX - $2 option.
  • Once you have selected your quality, you can either Convert More discs repeating the camera and quality steps or Go to Checkout. You can see you still have the option on this page to change the digital quality from a DVD conversion.

  • The Go to Checkout should prompt for you to sign in to verify what account you are adding the digital copy to. You may notice that Vudu can be an independent account or a Walmart account even if the email and passwords are the same. You will want to make sure you are signing into the correct account.
  • Once signed into your account, you will have a final cart page that will include tax for your area. Select the Checkout to complete your conversion.
  • Select the Convert Now on this page to finalized your purchase.
  • This final page shows your Order Confirmation.

Cost Savings

There is several cost savings to converting your old movies to the cloud. First, you will not pay more than $5 for converting an older movie you own to digital. I have found many of my old movies were close to $20 for the digital copy but I was able to convert it for $2. Second, you will have the digital copy in the cloud vs having physical discs that could be lost due to flooding, fire, or theft. Third, you can sell your old disc in a garage sale or at retailers like Replay who buy old movies for cash or credit to recoup some or all of your conversion costs.

What are your thoughts? Will you convert your collection to digital? Let me know.

Avengers: Endgame - Review

Movie Review - Spoiler Free I will try to keep this a spoiler free review. First, I would like to applaud Disney/Marvel for making a movie over the 2 hour limit that most movies have kept themselves to lately. The movie would have felt rushed if it was only 2 hours. The movie starts out appropriately timed to the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The movie kept you emotional invested throughout the entire movie. There was some predictability with the story but for the most part, I was able to enjoy the ride without knowing what would happen next. This to me made the movie extremely enjoyable. We get see how the characters deal with the aftermath of the Infinity War and what their options are moving forward. Each character was given their opportunity on screen during the movie. This is obviously easier to do since there are fewer characters after the events of Infinity War. I felt that many characters had an appropriate conclusion to their stories. The movie did leave me with a couple ...

Glass - Movie Review

History M. Night Shyamalan has made many movies that provide plot twists that are unusual. Unbreakable and Split are two such examples that surprisingly become part of the same universe. Unbreakable was released in 2000 by Walt Disney Studios. Split was released in 2017 by Universal Pictures. Glass is the third movie in the trilogy distributed jointly by Universal and Disney. M. Night Shyamalan’s movies were pretty reliable in the 1990s and early 2000s with movies like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village. The Last Airbender in 2010 was horrible. With a rich story from the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, M. Night managed to destroy over 8 hours of great story telling by condensing it into a 103 minute movie. Not to mention how the characters names were mispronounce throughout the film. I could spend an entire post on how that movie destroyed a live action series. My children convinced me to purchase Split. I admit at the time of this post, I have yet to...

Once Upon A Deadpool Review

Movie Ratings The current PG13 rating allows the use a limited number of profanity words during the film otherwise the film will get an R rating.  Deadpool and Deadpool 2 were both rated R mostly for the profanity used throughout the movie in place of actual dialogue. I was not a big fan of these movies coming in at an R rating as it would reopen the door for other superhero movies to go for an R rating. My personal opinion was that profanity in a superhero movie would be overused like 3D because studios believed it was the key for the movie's success at the box office. It was not. The character was. In my opinion, I believe Logan was properly done as an R movie as it did not over use profanity in the movie. Many might believe that the Deadpool movies were the first R rated superhero movies. They were not.  All three Blade movies that came out in 1998, 2002, and 2004 respectively were the first R rated superhero movies. I believe these movies were also properly done lik...
