Captain Marvel - Movie Review

Digital Sales

With the release of Captain Marvel, many retailers are offering several of the Marvel movies for $15 each. I was planning to talk about all the digital sales on Fridays but my followers are few and sales change every week. So I have decided to change things up a little bit again. I will keep Tuesdays for new and early access movies along with where to get them but I have decided to make Friday's movie reviews. I would enjoy any following this site to post comments on potential movies they would like reviewed.

Marvel Releases Dates

I want to say Marvel has been releasing movies to coincide with event celebrations. Last year, Black Panther came out in February. This was one of the first time a Marvel movie came out in February. Did anyone think this was due to February being Black History Month? If not, I bet you are thinking about it now.

Why do I mention this? Captain Marvel is the first Marvel movie with a female lead. They couldn't let DC get away with having Wonder Woman be the only comic book movie with a female lead. So why did they decide March 8 would be a good day to release this female lead movie? Today is International Women's Day. Coincidence? Not when it come to Marvel.

I am sure there are other Marvel movies that were released to match other events. Please add any you know in the comments.

Movie Review

I will try to limit any spoilers. Captain Marvel is actual a pilot named Carol Danvers who gains fantastic powers to become a superhero. If you are thinking Captain Marvel was a boy who says Shazam to change into a superhero, you would be thinking the superhero from the DC Universe.  That movie comes out April 5. For those of us old enough, there was a TV series called Shazam in the 1070s.

The opening credits were a tribute to Stan Lee with the superheroes were replace with all of his cameo scenes. This is not a spoiler to the movie but is touching to see as this was probably one of the last movies Stan has a cameo in.

A fellow movie goer said after 20 minutes that the movie was going slow. I don't agree with that assessment but am including it in case you watch it and agree. The movie starts in space before coming to Earth. Although not mentioned during the film, the story takes place in the 1990s. I feel they did an excellent job of keeping period accurate. Hard to say that with a straight face but I have to realize some people watching the movie might have been born in the 1990s.

My son mentioned and I agree they did so much to keep continuity with several Marvel movies that are based in our current time. Several characters are in the movie like Nick Fury, Agent Coulson, Korath, and Ronan. Nick Fury and Agent Coulson look their age with the advantage of special effects. Upon reflection, the movie did not overdue the camera shaking. The shaking the camera effect, I feel, has been abused in action movies far too long. I am glad this one did not overdue it.

There are flashbacks to give you the story of how Carol got her powers that take most of the movie before you have all the answers. If you are not a fan of flashbacks for story telling, this may not be the movie for your. I will say that there is plenty of action with a decent story. There were parts that even surprised me which is saying a lot. I believe the credit scene was excellent and the post credit scene was an improvement to some of the other post credit scenes that we have seen as of late.

If you are like me and enjoy seeing the Marvel movies in the theater, this is one to watch. If you prefer to save your money, I recommend going to a matinee or if you are a AMC stubs member, come to Findlay on Tuesdays for their $5 movies (except on holidays).

Rating

I would give this movie at least an HD digital purchase rating.  As this is a Disney own movie, it will rarely go less than $20 but it is worth $20.  I used my Microsoft Rewards Points to purchase the UHD copy with $25 gift card.

Avengers: Endgame - Review

Movie Review - Spoiler Free I will try to keep this a spoiler free review. First, I would like to applaud Disney/Marvel for making a movie over the 2 hour limit that most movies have kept themselves to lately. The movie would have felt rushed if it was only 2 hours. The movie starts out appropriately timed to the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The movie kept you emotional invested throughout the entire movie. There was some predictability with the story but for the most part, I was able to enjoy the ride without knowing what would happen next. This to me made the movie extremely enjoyable. We get see how the characters deal with the aftermath of the Infinity War and what their options are moving forward. Each character was given their opportunity on screen during the movie. This is obviously easier to do since there are fewer characters after the events of Infinity War. I felt that many characters had an appropriate conclusion to their stories. The movie did leave me with a couple ...

Glass - Movie Review

History M. Night Shyamalan has made many movies that provide plot twists that are unusual. Unbreakable and Split are two such examples that surprisingly become part of the same universe. Unbreakable was released in 2000 by Walt Disney Studios. Split was released in 2017 by Universal Pictures. Glass is the third movie in the trilogy distributed jointly by Universal and Disney. M. Night Shyamalan’s movies were pretty reliable in the 1990s and early 2000s with movies like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village. The Last Airbender in 2010 was horrible. With a rich story from the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, M. Night managed to destroy over 8 hours of great story telling by condensing it into a 103 minute movie. Not to mention how the characters names were mispronounce throughout the film. I could spend an entire post on how that movie destroyed a live action series. My children convinced me to purchase Split. I admit at the time of this post, I have yet to...

Once Upon A Deadpool Review

Movie Ratings The current PG13 rating allows the use a limited number of profanity words during the film otherwise the film will get an R rating.  Deadpool and Deadpool 2 were both rated R mostly for the profanity used throughout the movie in place of actual dialogue. I was not a big fan of these movies coming in at an R rating as it would reopen the door for other superhero movies to go for an R rating. My personal opinion was that profanity in a superhero movie would be overused like 3D because studios believed it was the key for the movie's success at the box office. It was not. The character was. In my opinion, I believe Logan was properly done as an R movie as it did not over use profanity in the movie. Many might believe that the Deadpool movies were the first R rated superhero movies. They were not.  All three Blade movies that came out in 1998, 2002, and 2004 respectively were the first R rated superhero movies. I believe these movies were also properly done lik...
