History
Godzilla has been a franchise since 1954. At the end of the film, there is a in memory of Yoshimitsu Banno and Haruo Nakajima. Yoshimitsu was a director of several original Godzilla movies. Haruo was the actor who played Godzilla in twelve consecutive films. Both passed away in 2017.
As I child, I remember watching the old Godzilla movies on TV. There was a very loose story that required Godzilla to come in and battle another titan threatening the world. In retrospect, it was similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with only one "hero" battling every type of monster including a robot version of Godzilla. Only in the 1998 movie and a brief animated series has Godzilla's appearance ever been altered.
Review
Watching the trailer, I was expecting the movie to be like the old films with a majority of Godzilla's rogues gallery appearing. I was surprised when the story focused on a family who were affected by the 2014 Godzilla movie. I'll save you the trouble, these characters did not appear in the 2014 film but are shown early in the King of the Monsters dealing with the aftermath from one of the 2014 attacks.
The film story reminds me a little of the 2005 Tom Cruise War of the Worlds where the story focuses on the humans and how they react to a situation. I enjoyed this approach to Godzilla: King of the Monsters. I will be curious how everything will turn out in the upcoming Godzilla vs Kong. The cast in the film are great. I enjoyed this movie more than I expected.
Rating
I would rate this as a solid HD movie. It will be worth picking up for under $10 in HD. I was able to pick my UHD copy up for $7 at Family Video with their buy three for $21 offer. I was lucky to get a UHD copy when I redeemed it as Family Video only shows the codes as HD and the codes do not actually specify the quality.
