Remakes
The original The Wolf Man came out in 1941. The Wolfman remake came out in 2010. I may be missing a few remakes in between but these are the two that I have in my collection. I am typically not a fan of remakes especially when there are several within a few years or a couple of decades between releases. Almost 70 years is acceptable in my book for a remake especially when one is in black and white. These made a great double feature just before Halloween.
The Wolf Man (1941)
This by far is one of my top horror movies as this is actually my first horror movie that I watched as a kid. It has remained a good movie with a tragic story. I am not surprised they remade this movie with only minor changes to the story. The 1941 special effects were fairly decent even if they are crude by today's standards.
Classic cast with Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, Ralph Bellamy, and Bela Lugosi. The acting sells the story. I wish some current movies would rely more on acting than special effect. There is one story arc that I notice now rewatching it again but still is a good movie.
For those who enjoy classic tragedies or even a good horror movie, I would give this a HD rating. I was cheap and converted the movie on Vudu for $1 (back when you would get a discount for 10 or more digital conversions at home) since I had the DVD. This movie is a bargain when you find it on sale for $5 in HD typically during the month of October.
The Wolfman (2010)
A great movie. Somehow they made the story even more of a tragedy than the original. More backstory was added as well. Cinematography is amazing with long shots and close up shots appropriate throughout the movie. My only complaint about the movie is the lighting but this is to be expected with a movie that is dark and mostly takes place at night.
An amazing cast with Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving. Each actor provide a fantastic performance. Best to watch the 1941 prior to watching the 2010 version because of the added story content.
For those who enjoy tragedies, mystery, or even a good horror movie, I would give this a HD rating. Again, I was cheap and converted the movie on Vudu for $2 since I had the DVD. This movie can be found for under $10 especially during the month of October.
