Blast From My Past
When I was growing up, I would get up early for Saturday morning cartoons. In the afternoon, there would occasionally be old monster movies like Godzilla where movies made overseas were dubbed with English. I was too young to care about this and just enjoyed the action they provided. About now you may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with The Iron Mask?
After almost two minutes of what companies supported the making of this movie, I realized this was not an American made movie. While Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzeneggar both speak English, I doubt that many other cast members speak English. Bit of trivia for you. Both Jackie an Arnold started movies in America not knowing English. It was early in their careers that that learned to speak English. I think this makes it special that they collaborated on this particular movie with a cast that does not speak English. Don't get me wrong, this movie is in English but like the old Godzilla movies, you will be quick to notice the lips do not match the words spoken.
Review
I will start off that I was not aware that a majority of the cast did not speak English. You can imagine my surprise when lips did not match the words. While this did not detract much from the movie, I was not prepared for it. Realizing this, I would love to have seen the movie with subtitles and the cast's actual dialog but I realize that most viewers do not want to read while they watch. It would also be a little hard as this movie moves at a good pace and has lots of action.
There is a little humor mixed in with everything is going on. About the only movie I have seen Jackie Chan in without humor was The Foreigner. By the end of the film, there was one question that was not answered for me but I think that mystery is a nice touch to the film. Overall, I was not disappointed with my purchase.
Rating
While I am not disappointed with my purchase, I still need to give this movie a SD rating for the dialog while I will give the story and fight sequences a low HD rating. Unless you are a fan of Jackie Chan or Arnold Schwarzeneggar, I would wait for this movie comes out on Netflix or other streaming service you already subscribe to. I was able to get my Blue-ray with Digital on sale of $12 from Best Buy which was free after using a rewards coupon. I would have been okay spending $5 of my own money but am glad it was just rewards used to purchase this movie.
