New Releases - January 15, 2019

Tuesdays

It will come as no surprise to those who enjoy movies that Tuesdays are special days for new movies. New releases come out every Tuesday to retailers. What some don't realize is that most digital movies are released a full 2 weeks early. Retailers call this Early Access. Crazy, a naming convention that makes sense. Each Tuesday I will note the new digital releases from retailers so you can find the best deal. Tuesdays are also when retailers update their weekly sales.

Digital Codes at Family Video

All movies codes are typically HDX but on rare occasions, it is possible that you might get a UHD copy instead. New release digital movies this week at Family Video for $8 include:

  • Halloween
  • Goosebumps 2
  • The Old Man & The Gun
  • Once Upon A Deadpool (extremely limit copies)
I was able to get copy of Once Upon A Deadpool. I am planning a review later this week once I have watched it. I know it will be surprising to many who know me that I didn't see this one in the theaters.

New Releases Online

Movies that are Movies Anywhere compatible are typically the same price across all retailers on release but there are exceptions. It is important to note that some retailers only offer HDX while other offer UHD for the same price. Movie retailers online prices include:

  • Halloween - $20 UHD (Vudu, Google, Microsoft, iTunes) or HDX (Amazon)
  • Goosebumps 2 - $15 UHD (Vudu, Google, Microsoft, iTunes) or HDX (Amazon)
  • The Old Man & The Gun - $15 UHD (Vudu, Google, iTunes) or HDX (Amazon, Microsoft)
  • Once Upon A Deadpool - $15 HDX (Vudu, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, iTunes)

Early Access Movies

Early access movies will come out in the next few weeks but are on sale now. Not all retailers offer early access to all movies. Early access movies differ from preorder movies in that you can watch them right after purchase but weeks before you will see them on retailer shelves. Preorder movies allow you to purchase movies while they are still in theaters but you will pay a premium and I do not recommend it. Sure you will get the movie as soon as it is release like an early access but you will also be paying the for the movie now and having to wait months for to actually watch it. Here are some of the new Early Access movies this week:
  • A Star Is Born - $20 UHD (Vudu, Google) or $30 (Microsoft)
  • Hunter Killer (not Movies Anywhere compatible) - $20 UHD (Vudu)  or $15 UHD (Google, Amazon)
  • First Man - $15 UHD (Vudu, Google, Microsoft) or $15 HDX (Amazon)
  • The Hate U Give - $15 UHD (Vudu, Google) or $15 HDX (Amazon, Microsoft)
  • Reign Of The Supermen - $30 UHD (Microsoft) or $20 HDX (Vudu, Google)
  • Johnny English Strikes Again - $15 UHD (Vudu, Microsoft) or $15 HDX (Google, Amazon)

Weekly Sales

Each retailer has specials each week.  You should look at your retailer for sales on movies that are not Movies Anywhere compatible.  Look at all retailers for sales on Movies Anywhere compatible.
  • Vudu has Split and Bad Time At The El Royale UHD for $10 this week. Vudu also has deals on Transformers, Mission Impossible, The Godfather, Star Trek, Jack Ryan, Jack Reacher and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to name a few that are $10 for HDX or less when bundle with their franchises. Note that most of these franchises are not Movies Anywhere compatible.
  • Google has several bundles on sale. Notably are Deadpool (both movies) $18, Jurassic World (all 5 movies) $40, Taken Unrated (all 3 movies) $10, Fast & Furious The Ultimate Ride Collection (all 8 movies) $35, X-Men (all 9 movies) $60, Star Trek 10 Original Movies (not Movies Anywhere compatible) $40, and several more.
  • Microsoft has the Resident Evil movies on sale for $10 each.
  • iTunes has Split, Bad Time At The El Royale, Interstellar, Hidden Figures, The Martian, Forest Gump, The Accountant, and several more UHD for $10 this week.  Not all these movies are Movies Anywhere compatible. iTunes also offers several movies for under $8 this week including movies from The Hunger Games, Alien, and Twilight franchises.

Did I Miss Anything

Let me know if I missed a sale on any movies that you were interested in. Include where you found it, the resolution, and price so that others who are interested can save like you did.

Avengers: Endgame - Review

Movie Review - Spoiler Free I will try to keep this a spoiler free review. First, I would like to applaud Disney/Marvel for making a movie over the 2 hour limit that most movies have kept themselves to lately. The movie would have felt rushed if it was only 2 hours. The movie starts out appropriately timed to the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The movie kept you emotional invested throughout the entire movie. There was some predictability with the story but for the most part, I was able to enjoy the ride without knowing what would happen next. This to me made the movie extremely enjoyable. We get see how the characters deal with the aftermath of the Infinity War and what their options are moving forward. Each character was given their opportunity on screen during the movie. This is obviously easier to do since there are fewer characters after the events of Infinity War. I felt that many characters had an appropriate conclusion to their stories. The movie did leave me with a couple ...

Glass - Movie Review

History M. Night Shyamalan has made many movies that provide plot twists that are unusual. Unbreakable and Split are two such examples that surprisingly become part of the same universe. Unbreakable was released in 2000 by Walt Disney Studios. Split was released in 2017 by Universal Pictures. Glass is the third movie in the trilogy distributed jointly by Universal and Disney. M. Night Shyamalan’s movies were pretty reliable in the 1990s and early 2000s with movies like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village. The Last Airbender in 2010 was horrible. With a rich story from the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, M. Night managed to destroy over 8 hours of great story telling by condensing it into a 103 minute movie. Not to mention how the characters names were mispronounce throughout the film. I could spend an entire post on how that movie destroyed a live action series. My children convinced me to purchase Split. I admit at the time of this post, I have yet to...

Protecting Your Online Collection

Protecting Your Collection In this time of cyber crime, you want to protect your investment of digital movies. I will be focusing this page on the primary retailers that connect with Movies Anywhere. At the time of this post, I am only aware of Google and iTunes are the only two retailers that offer secondary authentication. Technically, Amazon offers a secondary authentication with the use of a pin for digital purchases. I highly recommend you use these security feature provided by Amazon, Google, and iTunes. This provides great protection for your collection and any saved credit card information that you have with the retailer. I would not advise keeping your credit card information with a online retailer but I understand it's convenience. With that said, I will point out that users have the ability to removed their credit card information from Amazon, FandangoNow, Google, iTunes (provided you are not using Family Sharing), and Microsoft. This is convenient when one of the retai...
